I have chosen this article because this is an experience that has never been realized before.
First, the project, concluded with a team of scientists, was to make a jump in the stratosphere at a height of 36,600 m at the start of a capsule suspended from a helium balloon with the intention of being the first parachutist breaking the sound barrier.
Then, after two jumps tests and a cancelled attempt, he succeeded, on October the fourteenth 2012 at 5:31 French time, to beat four records :
- altitude record for a balloon flight inhabited
- the highest jump record in the world at 39,045 m
- free fall record with 36,529 m
- to break the sound barrier in free fall.
Finally, Baumgartner opened his parachute himself and this new "record" should therefore be approved (till then it was detained by Kittinger). Indeed, in 1960, Kittinger’s record wasn’t registered since its free fall was stopped automatically by the emergency shutdown.
Here’s a video of his jump, Josselin, 3F
