• First we are going to talk about the songs we studied in class “ Buy nothing day ”, “ Ka-Ching ” and “ Buying less ” which want us to buy nothing that is needless because we waste a lot. These songs are not very well-known but they make us aware of overconsumption.

Then, these songs want us to shop less and live more, to stop our spending before it starts and to think before buying something.
Next the  other main ideas that are coming out from these songs are :
✔    give a good example to the younger people.
✔    save our money and the planet too.

To conclude, our favorite song is “ Buying less ” because it makes us aware of the issues of the consumer society and this song is sung by young people.

  • The January sales began on January 11th and finished on February 14th .

    About January sales (1)

Personally, we don't participate a lot in the sales,  but our family usually buy more than us and not always useful things...

To begin with, I haven't bought lots of things, just one video game  with fourteen percent off. Then, my mother has found a website (''placedestendances.com'') to buy discount clothes  like dresses, jackets or throusers  and she has already bought three  cardboards of clothes ! Moreover she has also found an other website to buy shoes (''sarenza.com'')! (Antoine)

After that, like Antoine, I haven't bought many things, I've just bought two shirts  and two video games (30% off)  with one free video game. Next, my sister and my mother went downtown and bought lots of discount clothes that they didn't need, like skirts for my sister, dresses, jeans and many shoes.  Finally, my father went to the sales with me and bought a lot of underwear. •     First I didn't go to the sales in January but Paul did, in Reims and in Troyes.

Next, in our opinion, during the sales, everything is not cheap, some clothes are still very expensive.

After that, In France, the sales are an event which everybody waits for. This event attracts many people downtown. Some people would like the sales to be throughout the year and others would like them to be three weeks only.

The advantage and the disandvantage of the three -week- sales:
. The bargains are more important and numerous, but the shops are very busy because there are too many people. Next the merchandise goes quickly and in two weeks there is nothing left.

The advantage and the disandvantage of sales during the whole year :
. It is less interesting for the shops and the buyer because discounts are lower. However,  there are less people, so this is nicer to go shopping.

To conclude, we think the sales must remain like they are.

  • First, Buy Nothing Day is an international day of protest against the consumer society. It happens on the Friday after American Thanksgiving. In 2011 it happened on the 25th and 26th of November. It was founded by the artist Ted Dave in Vancouver.

Next, the first Buy Nothing Day was organized in Mexico in September 1992. In 1997 it was moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving, one of the busiest shopping days in the U.S. In Europe we celebrate it on the last Saturday in November. Lots of campaigns appeared around the world. Today, more than 65 nations participate in BND.

After that, this demonstration wants to convey a message: everything we buy has an impact on the environment. The rich countries are consuming 80% of the earth’s natural resources. So, this organization wants people to think about what they buy and know their effects on the planet. However it wants to convey another message: they want the people to buy things at local shops because they want to preserve them.
Then, on this day, people who want to participate mustn't buy anything and must recycle more and consume less. This year, Buy Nothing Day in the UK will take place on November 24th 2012.

Finally, Thomas thinks that it’s a very good demonstration because it was created because of real problems The fact that we buy too much destroys the nature. Nicolas thinks that is a good idea too. But for him, one day only is not enough and there isn't enough people who participate in it.

Here are other comments that we've collected:
Robin doesn't like Buy nothing Day because he thinks buying less is useless. Agathe doesn't like it because she is fond of shopping. Paul thinks it's a good idea and he would like that day to be more famous in the world and to have more demonstrations. Baptiste agrees with Buy Nothing Day because he thinks that we spend too much on things that we don't use.

  • What is Buy Nothing Day?

Buy Nothing Day (BND) is an international day of protest against consumerism. Typically celebrated the Friday after American Thanksgiving in North America and the following day internationally, in 2011 the dates were November 25th  and 26th  respectively. It was founded in Vancouver by artist Ted Dave. “It's a day where you challenge yourself, your family and friends to switch off from shopping and tune into life” ( www.buynothingday.co.uk ). The rules are simple, for 24 hours you will detox from shopping and anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

    What is Buy Nothing Day?
Saturday November 24th 2012 will be the next Buy Nothing Day in the UK and Friday November 23th in the USA.
The date of BND was chosen after Thanksgiving because people begin to buy presents for Christmas.

The official Buy Nothing Day website explains the disproportionate level of environmental damage :

    What is Buy Nothing Day?

To our mind, Buy Nothing Day is a good idea to protest against over consumption and to realize the important impact on the environment but few people don't know it.
