What is Buy Nothing Day? (2)
First, Buy Nothing Day is an international day of protest against the consumer society. It happens on the Friday after American Thanksgiving. In 2011 it happened on the 25th and 26th of November. It was founded by the artist Ted Dave in Vancouver.
Next, the first Buy Nothing Day was organized in Mexico in September 1992. In 1997 it was moved to the Friday after Thanksgiving, one of the busiest shopping days in the U.S. In Europe we celebrate it on the last Saturday in November. Lots of campaigns appeared around the world. Today, more than 65 nations participate in BND.
After that, this demonstration wants to convey a message: everything we buy has an impact on the environment. The rich countries are consuming 80% of the earth’s natural resources. So, this organization wants people to think about what they buy and know their effects on the planet. However it wants to convey another message: they want the people to buy things at local shops because they want to preserve them.
Then, on this day, people who want to participate mustn't buy anything and must recycle more and consume less. This year, Buy Nothing Day in the UK will take place on November 24th 2012.
Finally, Thomas thinks that it’s a very good demonstration because it was created because of real problems The fact that we buy too much destroys the nature. Nicolas thinks that is a good idea too. But for him, one day only is not enough and there isn't enough people who participate in it.
Here are other comments that we've collected:
Robin doesn't like Buy nothing Day because he thinks buying less is useless. Agathe doesn't like it because she is fond of shopping. Paul thinks it's a good idea and he would like that day to be more famous in the world and to have more demonstrations. Baptiste agrees with Buy Nothing Day because he thinks that we spend too much on things that we don't use.
